Sometimes a pattern can become so familiar that it starts to feel like personality.

I have lots of clients who tell me at the beginning, I’m a people pleaser. And by the time we finish working together, they wouldn’t describe themselves that way anymore.

We haven’t changed their personality. They haven’t suddenly become a different person.They’ve become aware of a pattern they developed for a really understandable reason, often to fit in, stay safe, avoid conflict, be liked or feel in control.

A pattern that was once useful can become so well rehearsed that you stop experiencing it as a choice.It just becomes automatic. Kind of like the way you know how to open a door, you don’t think about it, that’s the way you communicate with others.

And when something is automatic enough, it can almost pull you into a trance. You respond before you’ve really noticed what is happening, and afterwards it can feel like, “Well, that’s just me.”

The same can happen with anxiety.
“I’m an anxious person” can become the explanation for everything, when sometimes there is a very specific pattern underneath it.

This is why I’m fascinated in what sits underneath the label people tell me they are. Not because the label is wrong, but because it can make a pattern feel more permanent than it actually is.

I have found through many years of this work when people are freed from these patterns they are actually free to be who they really really are.

I write this to for you out there who is very good at reading other peoples moods but struggles to know their own, always says they are fine when they aren’t, is always trying to say things ‘right’, avoids any scenarios where there is a risk of ‘getting in trouble’ and worries oh really worries about being too much. One of the most important things we can learn in life is how to communicate ourselves clearly in a way that really lands with people.
It changes our relationships, our work and the way we move through the world. BUT. There is a huge difference between communicating and convincing, where we try to control how someone receives it. The trap is when we keep explaining justifying and defending because we need someone else to finally see it the way we see it. And this is where so much energy gets lost. You can communicate clearly and still be misunderstood. Being misunderstood does not mean you aren’t safe. This is the allure of trying to be understood for so many of us. As much as we try, everyone is interpreting the world through their own map. The shift happens when you begin to surrender the need to control how you’re perceived. Not because being understood doesn’t matter- but because your sense of self cannot depend on whether someone else gets you. #personaldevelopment #peoplepleasing #selfawareness

Analysing vs feeling. Which ones feels more comfortable for you?
What I find fascinating is so many of my clients are so emotionally intelligent- they know who they are. However being able to dig into why you might be feeling the way you do can become an effective strategy to avoid feeling. It can lead to more anxious thoughts more spiralling more overwhelm. I know that personally to be very true. On the second slide I suggest a very simple re frame, today instead of asking why you feel anxious, worried or the myriad of human emotions ask yourself what you are feeling. It might feel not solving it might not feeling fixing but it might lead to clarify and actually taking a step in the right direction.
